Project Helios is a currently a sub sector of UBC's student run Mars Colony design team. Driven by the potential of outer space, Helios has the initiative of providing sustainable energy to Earth by extracting Helium-3 from the Moon.
Our Lunar Extraction team is made up of a diverse group of young motivated engineers. The motto is to never stop learning and reaching as we continue to pursue this dream of making Helios come to life.
Helium-3 (He3) is an element that has the potential to be used as a fuel for immense and unimaginable amounts of power in future nuclear fusion power plants. There is very little helium-3 available on the Earth. However, there are thought to be significant supplies on the Moon.
With every will, there must be a way. The project Helios team is trying to implement a strategy to mine, process and store this precious element so it can be sent back to our planet for use in powerplants.
